Pretend

My grandmother's house smelled like
mothballs and Gain
The sunlight danced through the windows
in time with the conversation between the hens
outside,
down the lane.
She bought us cereal that I didn't realize was gross
until I bought it on a whim
as an adult
hoping for some magic.
I feel her sometimes at night
in the space between waking and asleep
I don't believe in ghosts
or the afterlife
or anything
- I know she isn't there
but I let myself pretend
now and then.
